Background:

Opened in 1980 to cater for Sullom Voe Oil Terminal; as a result, includes children from all over Britain as well as those who have lived all their lives in Shetland. Accommodated in modern, spacious, and well-resourced buildings; facilities include art room, music room, library, resource rooms, general-purpose areas, computer and audio-visual room, and classrooms. Sports field, small field, two tarmac playgrounds, a multi-court quiet area, sculpture garden, gardens and wild area with pond and trees. One of first permanent eco-schools in Scotland; recycling schemes as well as schemes for developing school grounds. Places importance on global education and citizenship; takes part in Comenius projects; link with school in Gambia. Aims to provide a 'happy and stimulating environment' for all pupils; curriculum is broad and balanced, and pupils learn 'through activity'. School choir performs in concerts; pupils also given opportunity to learn musical instrument. Other extra-curricular activities include library club, football and netball coaching; science club supported by BP. Active school board; parents welcomed into school. Artworks award in 2002 for producing sculpture, working with local gallery and artists from Netherlands. Winner of the national poster competition for Eco-schools; entered in international sector.
