Background:

Situated in Aith village on the west mainland of Shetland, some 21 miles from Lerwick, Aith Junior High overlooks pasture land and the local marina. The first school opened in 1922, it became a junior high in 1970, and moved into its current 'well-maintained, attractive' building in 1982. With a growing population and a wide range of subjects offered, space is at a premium and an extension in keeping with the architecture of the school was added in 1998 to provide a new art and science block and allow for the reorganisation of rooms for computing, technical subjects and home economics. Further reorganisation will be completed by August 2001 to provide a new library and resource area, extra classrooms and extended dining facilities. A new leisure centre with full access for the school will also be completed on adjacent land by summer 2002. The school has a 'happy, secure, well-disciplined atmosphere, relaxed, caring yet well-structured, promoting the development of the personality, talents and mental and physical abilities of the pupil to their fullest potential'.
